D-Mannose for Urinary Tract Infection
D-Mannose for a Urinary Tract Infection, could it be that simple? Health care costs continue to rise and antibiotics are becoming more and more resistant. Millions of doctors appointments are made yearly due to Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) .Over half of those people will contract another infection within the same year.Although everyone is prone to UTIs, women make up the majority. So far doctors only prescribe antibiotics, but is that the best way? Many studies have shown that it is not. So if there is a better form of treatment, then what is it? It’s a simple sugar called D-mannose.
What is D-Mannose?
D-Mannose is not a drug. It is a completely natural sugar that is found in certain types of fruit. D-Mannose is somewhat like glucose. The difference between the two is that d-mannose does not get stored in your liver, and it does not convert to glycogen. D-Mannose doesn’t interfere with blood sugar because only small amounts are slowly digested.
You are now probably wondering how a sugar on earth a sugar can cure a urinary tract infection. To answer that question, we need to understand what causes UTIs.
The majority of urinary tract infections are caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli). This is a friendly bacteria as long as it’s found in your intestines. It is important to note that this E. coli is not the kind associated with food. This type of E. coli is naturally found in the intestines.
A urinary tract infection is formed when the E. coli adheres to the urinary tract. It literally sticks to the lining of the urinary wall. It can also climb its way up to the kidneys if left untreated.
E. coli can get pushed inside the urinary tract in many different ways. Wiping back to front, sexual intercourse, and having an enlarged prostate (in men) are a few examples. You can read all about the
causes and how to prevent urinary tract infections on the Prevention page.
How Does D-Mannose Help?
We need a way to wash this nasty bacteria out of our body. Since E. coli sticks to the urinary tract, urination will not wash it away. This is where d-mannose comes in and saves the day. Once in your urinary tract, d-mannose “coats” the E. coli bacteria. This causes the bacteria to “let go” of the urinary wall. Now the E. coli will get washed away during urination.
Most people notice an improvement of their symptoms within a few hours. It usually takes a couple of days to be completely free of the urinary tract infection. That sure beats waiting on a prescription to get antibiotics. Not to mention, the antibiotics take at least a week to work.
D-Mannose is natural and very safe. Everyone, including elderly, children, pregnant women and diabetics can take it. You also can’t overdose on d-mannose.Using d-mannose for a urinary tract infection has been done for many years. It was first given to animals that had urinary tract infections around 50 years ago. So, d-mannose can even cure your pet.
How great is that?
